Sandy Washmon, 69-year-old Woodward resident, died Tuesday, May 12, 2020, surrounded by her family. Private family service will be held, with interment in Fairlawn Cemetery in Fort Supply. Billings Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Services will be broadcast live on the funeral home Facebook page at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2020.
Sandra Mae (Damon) Washmon was born on November 9, 1950, in Mesa, Arizona; she was the daughter of Francis Irwin and Virginia Lee (Burba) Damon. Sandy grew up a military child, so she lived all over North America, including Arizona, Newfoundland, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. Sandy graduated from Enid High School. She then attended Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva, earning her Bachelor's Degree and Master's in English and Counseling.
On March 28, 1975, Sandy was united in marriage to Jimmy Dean "Red" Washmon in the Fort Supply United Methodist Church. They made their home in Fort Supply, where Sandy began her teaching career. Sandy and Red were blessed with two children, Carly Nicole and Tyler Blake. Later they moved to Woodward, where Sandy worked for the Woodward Public Schools, as a teacher and counselor. After retiring from Woodward Schools, she became a Vice President of operations for Performance Learning Systems. Sandy traveled throughout the country sharing her teaching skills and mentoring other teachers.
Sandy had a profound love for her family and friends. She loved making memories with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and playing cards with family and friends.
She was a member of the Woodward Lady Elks, Woodward Chamber of Commerce, Northwest Crisis Team, Oklahoma Academy State Board, Woodward Education Association, Oklahoma Education Association, and many, many more.
She is survived by her mother, Virginia Damon of Seiling; one son, Tyler Washmon and wife Fanny of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one daughter, Carly Stephens and husband Greg of San Angelo, Texas; four grandchildren, Madeline Stephens, Major Stephens, Brandon Jing, and Isabel Washmon; two brothers, Ron Damon of Enid, Steve Damon and wife Lani of Lawton; one sister, Donna Cook and husband Kenneth of Seiling; other relatives; and many friends.
Sandy was preceded in death by her father, Francis (Smiley) Damon, and husband, Jim (Red) Washmon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sandy Washmon Memorial Scholarship, with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
