John Russell Jones
John Russell Jones, age 68, received a call from God on Thursday, October 31, 2019. He passed at his home in Durant, Oklahoma.
John was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on May 3, 1951. He was raised in Ada, Oklahoma, by his parents Eugene "Mutt" and Marjorie (Irwin) Jones. He graduated from Ada Public Schools.
John joined the United States Navy in 1969 and served overseas in the Vietnam War from 1970-1973. While serving in the Navy, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, The Vietnam Service Ribbon, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
After returning from the Vietnam War, he worked as an EMT for Life EMS in Enid, Oklahoma. During this time, he made lifelong friends and met his future wife, Shawn. John later became an EMT instructor at Autry Technology Center of Enid.
John married Karen "Shawn" Fairfield on November 16, 1985, in Enid, Oklahoma at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. Anybody who knew him, would confirm that John loved Shawn with everything that he had and everything that he was. Shawn encouraged and supported John as he attended the nursing program at Northern Oklahoma College where he would graduate with honors and become an RN. After graduating nursing school, John worked as an RN at Meadowlake Behavioral Health Hospital in Enid. He spent the rest of his nursing career doing everything he could to positively impact the lives of not only his patients but his co-workers as well. John considered many of the people that he worked with to be close friends, and some even became like family.
Aside from loving his work, John loved to create things, whether it be by crafting a cradle out of wood, a rose from iron, or a book from his memories. What John was most proud of creating though, were his children.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie and Eugene Jones; his brothers, Emmitt and Joe; and his sister, Nora.
John is survived by the family he created and many friends. John is survived by his wife Karen "Shawn" Jones of Durant, Oklahoma; son Dalton Jones and girlfriend Maria Alley of Lebanon, Missouri, and their sons, Landon and Jackson; daughter Delaney Jones of Bethany, Oklahoma; daughter Roxanne Mitchell of Plano, Texas, and her children, Kira and Jordan; and son Russell and wife Michelle (Taylor) Mitchell of McKinney, Texas, and their sons, Dylan and Mason.
John was a 100% Disabled Veteran. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans).
Graveside services with Honors will be held at Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Muskogee, Oklahoma, on Friday, October 8th, at 10:00 a.m.
Funeral Services are under direction of Brown's Funeral Service, Durant. Online condolences can be given at
