David Marion McCune Obituary

David Marion McCune was born in Stafford County (Zenith), Kansas, to Arlington Emery and Encie Arena McCune on January 31, 1931. He passed away April 5, 2025 in Enid, Oklahoma.

Marion attended grade school at a country school (Chaney Dell southwest of Helena) all eight years, then attended Helena High School, graduating in 1948. After graduation, he attended Phillips University for one semester before transferring to Oklahoma A&M College. After the sudden death of his father, Marion returned to care for the family farm. He went on to graduate from Northwestern State College.

Marion married Earlene Maudie Eubank of Fairview, Oklahoma, on May 27, 1951, and moved to the family farm southwest of Helena where they raised wheat, cattle, chickens and milked cows. The 50's were tough years on the farm, so when the State School moved from Stringtown, Oklahoma, to Helena, Marion went to work there as a houseparent. Marion served as a houseparent, Social Worker, Guidance Counselor, Assistant Superintendent and finally Superintendent in his 27 years at the State School. In 1978, he became the District Supervisor for Juvenile Aftercare Services for Northwest Oklahoma until his retirement in 1994.

After retirement, Marion and Earlene moved to Enid, Oklahoma. They traveled all over the U.S. and visited Branson three to four times a year while continuing to farm and raise Polled Hereford cattle. Marion was very involved in the church he loved, Oakwood Christian Church. He was dedicated to the church leadership team and was passionate about his role as an elder of the church.

Marion is survived by his children, David (and Bea) of Enid, Oklahoma; Jacqueline (and Mitchel) Willsie of Exeter, Rhode Island; Galen (and JoAnn) of Woodward, Oklahoma; and Rick (and Barbara} of Edmond, Oklahoma; foster son, Coy Hammons (and Joice) of Kellyville, Oklahoma. Survivors also include many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Marion would often say to Earlene and others "look what a mess we created."

Marion is preceded in death by his wife, Earlene Maudie McCune, with whom he shared 69 years of marriage; his parents, A.E. and Encie McCune; his brother, Aldred McCune and his wife, Bessie; his sisters, Joyce Baker and her husband J.C. and Arlene McCreary and her husband Ira; and his sister-in-law, Lajean Minnick and her husband Glen. Marion was the last family survivor of his generation.
