A memorial service to celebrate the life of Don Hughes, 86, is 10 a.m. Friday, July 21, 2017, at Anderson-Burris Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bobby Hall officiating.
Cremation arrangements and services are by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home and Crematory.
Don was born to William A. and Fannie May (Campbell) Hughes July 3, 1931, in Slick, and passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017, in Enid.
Don graduated from Burbank High School. On July 15, 1951, he married RoAnn Maxwell, in Ulysses, Kan. While in the oil field, Don traveled with his family in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas, settling his family in Oklahoma City.
In 1972, he started Hughes Drilling Company, moving the company from Oklahoma City to Enid in 1974. In the early 1980s, Don started Birch Creek Ranch training and mare center. He was of Creek ancestry.
Don is survived by his children, Jane and Danny Thornton, Jenny and Guy Root, and Donald and Sharon Hughes all of Enid; three grandchildren, Jennifer Thornton, Bryce and wife, Gina Thornton, and Jamie and husband, Chris Gibbons; two great-grandchildren, Brett and Cooper Thornton; two brothers, Bob and Jim; and two sisters, Judy McKee, and Betty Jackson .
He was preceded in death by his wife RoAnn, three brothers, and his son Lance.
